Does Stem Cell Therapy Help Hips?

Many people experience a wide range of health issues and disorders involving their hips. Some types of orthopedic conditions even affect the bone and tissue that constitute the hip joints.

Oftentimes, these conditions result in severe or chronic pain. One traditional treatment approach is hip arthroplasty, which is also known as hip replacement surgery.

This invasive procedure has potential side effects and requires an extended recovery period. Fortunately, many patients have had positive experiences with non-surgical alternative treatments, which include stem cell therapies.

Common Hip Conditions

Many underlying ailments can cause ongoing pain in or around the hip. These include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Hip osteoarthritis
  • Hip bursitis
  • Hip joint degeneration
  • Labral tears
  • Tendinopathy

Many patients also suffer hip joint pain because of an injury earlier in their lifetimes. Sports injuries are particularly common. With a standard approach, people who suffer from hip pain must decide whether the ongoing discomfort is worth a long recovery from surgery.

Stem Cell Therapy for Hips

Fortunately, stem cell therapies offer less invasive treatment options. There is evidence that these approaches can be useful for conditions that result in hip pain.

One of the more popular alternative treatments for hips is regenerative medicine. One type of regenerative medicine offering is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This type of therapy may be useful for mild-to-moderate hip conditions.

PRP therapy involves concentrating platelets taken from the plasma in a patient’s blood. To do this, a small blood sample is taken. The blood is centrifuged to concentrate the plasma cells and growth factors. The platelet-rich plasma is then reintroduced into the problem area on the patient’s body.

Recent research suggests that these therapies may help joint tissue to become stronger. When it is used to treat certain conditions, hip tissue may heal itself over time.

In cases in which PRP therapy is not enough, it can be supplemented with mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatments. The injection of PRP in conjunction with MSC may encourage the development of new joint, tendon, and ligament tissue.

Minimally Invasive Treatment Options

These approaches may not provide a permanent solution for all hip conditions. But powerful MSC and PRP therapies can offer significant relief to many patients. These innovative treatments have helped many people to avoid the pain and lengthy recovery time of a traditional hip replacement surgery.

Because these therapies are minimally invasive, many patients only experience temporary discomfort. Any bruising typically fades after 24-48 hours. MSC and PRP therapies may offer patients the possibility of relief without the need for surgery and provide improvements to their daily lives.
